New Executive Member

WE ARE DELIGHTED to welcome Roma Cohen to the 7 member Synagogue Executive, where she is adding valuable input and boosting the existing female representation.

HARROGATE HEBREW CONGREGATION has had a major refit costing tens of thousands of pounds in time for the Yom tovim.  This included a new parquet floor and new furniture in the Stanley Burton banqueting hall. There were also roof repairs to the main building and the succah. Additionally there was an upgrade to the shul’s flat and toilet facilities.  Secretary Phillip Morris said: “To those who know us we are haven in the heart of Harrogate. The Synagogue is delighted to have been in such a strong financial position to carry out a large programme of works for the benefit of the congregation.

“We are blessed to enjoy a beautiful, traditional civil service and very friendly community, with kiddushim every Shabbat,” he added. “We look forward to welcoming the usual influx of guests in even more splendid surroundings."  The synagogue attract members and guests from a wide surrounding area, including those those from the recently closed Bradford synagogue. The shul now has a diverse cohort of ministers on its Shabbat rota to lead the service, who are able to spend the weekend in the synagogue flat with their families.

Mr Morris said: “We have started our regular services a little later at 10 am and this has proved popular, resulting in increased attendance.  We are delighted to welcome newcomers and familiar faces through our doors.”

Heritage Day

SEPTEMBER SEES Harrogate Shul open its doors to the public and welcome all comers to take a peek inside. Synagogue members are on hand to explain and answer questions. The beauty of the stained glass windows and scrolls, the prestigious history of the shul and more attract a wide variety of visitors. A delightful day for all. We'll be sure to give you plenty of notice of next year's event so you can invite your family and friends to look around and meet our open, friendly community.

Call ahead to book your school for a visit. We have a very busy programme of young people come through our doors to learn about our faith, traditions and the long-standing presence and contributions of Jews to the wider community; we currently have 3 MBE’s, an OBE and a CBE amongst our members.  If you would like to arrange a visit we’d love to accommodate you!

Cubs, Rotary, Probus and many diverse groups are amongst the visitors in the last few months.

Members from age 13 to 103

WE HAVE JUST HAD THE youngest member of our community performing the Maftir and Haftorah - well done Nicky - and also the oldest - I am sure he will not be offended by describing him in this way!

Bill Jerome celebrated his 103rd birthday and we all wish him many more of them. Bill has received some well deserved publicity during the Battle of Britain commemorations for his role in those dark days - which many of us were not aware of. But such an age difference - of some 90 years - must set a record!  There was also a superb Kiddush, enjoyed by all.
